Things to Give Up for Lent
On Sunday at Mass at Franciscan University of Steubenville, the homily was about what to give up for Lent (originally from EWTN):
Give up complaining . . . . focus on gratitude.
Give up pessimism . . . . . become an optimist.
Give up harsh judgments . . think kindly thoughts.
Give up worry . . . . . . . trust Divine Providence.
Give up discouragement. . . be full of hope.
Give up bitterness. . . . . turn to forgiveness.
Give up hatred. . . . . . . return good for evil.
Give up negativism. . . . . be positive.
Give up anger . . . . . . . be more patient.
Give up pettiness . . . . . become mature.
Give up gloom . . . . . . . enjoy the beauty that is
all around you.
Give up jealousy. . . . . . pray for trust.Give up gossiping . . . . . control your tongue.
Give up sin . . . . . . . . turn to virtue.
Give up giving up . . . . . hang in there!
This List is fantastic; an excellent guideline to live by, one will also becomes a much better person by following it. This is so much better than just giving up such things as sweets or a favorite food.

How are you doing now that we're coming to the end of Lent?
Me? I'm failing. It's as though the focus on NOT doing facilitates the doing.
Weak person that I am, thanks be to God for his mercies. I rely on them everyday.
My Lent this year (2007) was even tougher than 2006. Something about being in Rome made it both awesome and really tough.
