
Sometime this month,
Pope Benedict XVI is expected to issue a statement (
motu proprio) which will encourage the celebration of the Mass in Latin. This
Tridentine Mass is the same Mass which was celebrated prior to
Vatican II. While Vatican II never abolished the celebration of the Tridentine Mass, it did allow for the use of the
vernacular (
Sacrosanctum Concilium 36). Among the expected outcomes of this statement by the Pope is that groups previously looked upon as
schismatic (though not
heretical) by Rome will likely be seen as being (truly and in every sense) in full communion with the Catholic Church.
